Discussion:
Flash player "local storage" settings do not persist

I work in support for www.pandora.com online radio, which requires Flash local
storage.

While this works great for many users, a few have been having issues getting
the Flash local storage settings to "stick". That is, they change the setting
from 0 to, say, 10kb and the change never stays--it just resets to 0 the next
time they check. Its been a major stumper for me. Usually the users are using
windows machines and have full administrator priviledges.

Also, changing the globl local storage settings here:

ager03.html#117498

Doesn't work either. The settings just reset themselves.

Is this a known issue? Does anyone know why this might happen?

I am having the exact same issue. I'm using WindowsXP with full admin
priveleges, but when I change the local storage settings, it always reverts
back to 0. No matter what I try, the change just won't "stick".
I even tried completely uninstalling flash, rebooting, and reinstalling flash
player, but I still have the same problem. I have both Firefox (1.2) and IE 6,
and the same thing happens in BOTH browsers.
Where are these settings stored?
Can anyone help with this issue?

Hi, not sure if this is the same problem or not but we are having our settings
change every-time we dump files then we have lost flash. Not sure what's going
on or why but we are constantly having to reset again. We have two ebay stores
so we need to have this. also on the internet a lot so we have to dump files.
have you found a solution?

This is a problem that has been stumping us for some time. Sadly macromedia
hasn't been too helpful on the subject. Here are a few suggetions that worked
for others in the past, but are far from a reliable solution:

Try going here:

http://www.macromedia.com/support/documentation/en/flashplayer/help/settings_man
ager03.html#117498

The window you see at the top of this page is not a screenshot, it is the
actual global configuration window for your flash player. Make sure "allow
third party flash content to store data on your computer" is checked. Drag the
slider there up if it is at 0. (mine is at 100k).

Under global security settings (the next tab over). Select "Always ask".

Under the "Website privacy" tab (the monitor with the eye in it), make sure
that pandora.com com is not set to "Always deny" if it is in the list of
"Vistied websites". If so, set it to "always ask" or "always allow".

If that doesn't work, another thing you can try is manually deleting your
flash local storage directory to reset the settings. If you're on a PC, this is
usually located at: C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Application
Data\Macromedia\Flash Player\ (where %username is your login name).
try deleting that directory and see if that helps.

Finally, you could also try reinstalling flash. To uninstall your old version,
you need an additional program obtainable here:
http://www.macromedia.com/cfusion/knowledgebase/index.cfm?id=tn_14157

Then visit here:
http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=Shockw
aveFlash
to ge the newest version.

ALso, this could have to do with not having the priviledges to write the local
storage stettings. They are stored on the filesystem, and not the registry, so
administrator or equivalent access might be necessary.

Will someone from Macromedia ever acknowledge this issue?
Macromedia has definitely not been helpful with this problem. I've written to
their support team a couple of times, and had no response.
I tried all of the above suggestions, even completely uninstalling and
reinstalling flash, and it did not help.
However, I did finally get it to work by Uninstalling the new version of
flash, and reinstalling the old version 7.0. The old version doesn't have this
local storage problem.
I used the uninstaller here:
http://www.macromedia.com/cfusion/knowledgebase/index.cfm?id=tn_14157

You can go here to get previous versions of flash player:
